ChatGPT ads are live in India: what founders and CMOs should test, and what to wait on

OpenAI has opened ChatGPT advertising to Indian brands and announced a new visual format on 5 October 2026. The channel is real but young. Here is how to decide your budget, your guardrails and your scorecard.

Key takeaways

  • ChatGPT ads are live in India for logged-in adults on the Free and Go plans, and OpenAI has said self-serve access to Ads Manager opens up to businesses of different sizes.
  • On 5 October 2026 OpenAI announced a visual ad format, to be tested in the United States first. India is not part of that test yet.
  • Treat the channel as a capped experiment, not a budget shift. A fixed test budget with a clear payback ceiling protects you.
  • Judge it on qualified leads and paying customers, not clicks. Tag every ad and track the lead through to invoice.
  • Organic visibility in AI answers and paid placement are separate jobs. Do both on their own merits.

What changed, and when

ChatGPT now carries paid ads in India. Business Standard reported on 27 August 2026 that OpenAI would show clearly labelled sponsored products and services to logged-in adults on the Free and Go plans, and open a self-serve Ads Manager to businesses from 4 September. On 5 October 2026 OpenAI added a new visual ad format that it will test during image generation.

For a founder or CMO, the practical meaning is simple. A new place where buyers ask detailed questions before they choose a vendor now sells advertising, and you can enter without a media agency. That is an opportunity and a risk, because new channels attract hype faster than they produce evidence.

Here is what is known, as reported by sources we checked on 10 October 2026:

  • Who sees ads in India: logged-in users aged 18 and above on the Free and Go plans. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education users do not see ads. The Go plan costs ₹399 a month, per Business Standard.
  • Where they appear: as a sponsored product or service below a ChatGPT response, when OpenAI finds a relevant one. They are labelled and kept visually separate from the answer.
  • Who can buy: WPP and Omnicom are the first agency partners, and Business Standard reports self-serve access to Ads Manager from 4 September with daily budgets starting at ₹725.
  • What is off limits: no ads next to sensitive or regulated subjects, including health, mental health and politics.
  • Scale: Business Standard cites 330 million unique monthly ChatGPT users in India in May 2026, up from 297 million in December 2025.
  • Newest format: according to 9to5Google’s report of OpenAI’s 5 October announcement, a visual ad format will be tested during image generation, in the United States, starting later in October. A broad rollout is not confirmed.

The originating announcements are on OpenAI’s own site: new ad format and measurement and expanding access with ChatGPT ads. Our automated check could not open those pages, so we have relied on the two news reports above for the specifics. Read the originals before you commit budget.

Why this matters to your pipeline

Search behaviour is moving from a list of links to a conversation. A buyer who once typed three searches and opened ten tabs may now ask one detailed question and read one answer. Ads placed under that answer reach the buyer at a high-intent moment, which is why the channel is interesting. The same shift is why your organic visibility inside AI answers matters, and we cover that separately in our guide to generative engine optimization.

The business questions are the usual ones. What does a qualified lead cost here? How many become customers? How fast does the spend come back as gross profit? Our CAC payback guide gives you the test to apply to any new channel, including this one.

What we do not know yet

  • Typical click or conversion rates for Indian advertisers. No reliable public benchmark exists, and any agency quoting one is selling you a story.
  • How the targeting and measurement tools will evolve. OpenAI states that ads use information that stays within ChatGPT, so expect fewer audience controls than on Meta or Google.
  • Whether the new image format will reach India, and when.

These are our judgements, not platform guidance. Your own numbers should overrule them.

A 30 day test plan

Keep it small and honest. A reasonable structure is below. All numbers are placeholders to adapt, not benchmarks.

  1. Week 0, set the ceiling. Decide the maximum CAC payback you will accept for this channel and the total you are willing to lose to learn. Many teams cap a test at a small share of monthly paid spend. Pick a share your CFO signs off in writing.
  2. Week 0, set up tracking. Use unique landing pages or UTM tags per ad. Make sure each enquiry lands in one place with its source, so sales can mark it qualified or not. Follow our advice on metrics that matter.
  3. Week 1, launch two or three offers. Write ads for different buyer questions, not different adjectives. Answer the question the buyer asked, and send them to a page that continues the answer.
  4. Weeks 2 and 3, read leads, not clicks. Review lead quality weekly with the sales team. Pause ads that bring unqualified enquiries even if clicks are cheap.
  5. Week 4, decide. Compare cost per qualified lead and early payback against your Meta and Google averages. Scale, repeat with changes, or stop. Write the decision down.

Guardrails to agree before launch

  • Claims in ads must be ones you can prove. Follow ASCI and platform policy as you would on any channel.
  • Do not feed personal data into ad targeting or tooling without a lawful basis. If you collect leads from the ads, your consent notices should already meet the DPDP Rules checklist.
  • Name one owner for the test and one date to review it.

Paid placement and organic visibility are different jobs

OpenAI says ads do not influence the answers ChatGPT gives. That means paying for an ad does not buy you a mention in the answer itself. Organic visibility still depends on being clear, credible and cited across the web. Our guide on getting mentioned in ChatGPT covers that work. A sensible plan funds both: content and reputation work that compounds, and capped paid tests that give fast learning.

If your website cannot answer buyer questions plainly, ads will only send people to a weak page. Fix the page first. Our landing page checklist is a good starting point.

What good ads look like in an answer box

An ad under a conversational answer is judged against the answer above it. If the answer was specific and your ad is generic, the buyer scrolls past. Write the ad as the next logical step in the buyer’s research: a clear offer, a plain statement of who it is for, and a landing page that picks up exactly where the question stopped.

  • Be specific about fit. Say who the product suits and who it does not. Honest qualification lowers wasted clicks.
  • Match the landing page to the question. A buyer who asked about pricing models should land on a page that explains your pricing, not on the homepage.
  • Offer a low-friction next step. A short demo, a sample report or a WhatsApp conversation works better than a long form for a first touch.
  • Respond fast. A lead from a high-intent moment cools quickly. Our note on instant lead response shows how to reply in minutes.

What to do this week

  1. Read OpenAI’s ad policies and the Ads Manager terms for India. Confirm eligibility for your category.
  2. List the five questions your best buyers ask before they buy. These become your ad themes.
  3. Agree the test budget, payback ceiling and owner with finance and sales.
  4. Check that every enquiry source is captured in one place. If it is not, fix that before you spend anything.
  5. Book a 30 day review. If the numbers do not meet your ceiling, stop and move the budget back.

Frequently asked questions

Are ChatGPT ads available in India?

Yes. On 27 August 2026 Business Standard reported that OpenAI would show ads to logged-in users aged 18 and above on the Free and Go plans in India, with WPP and Omnicom as the first agency partners. Paid plans such as Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education stay ad free.

How do I advertise on ChatGPT as a small or mid-sized business?

Business Standard reported that OpenAI would open self-serve access to ChatGPT Ads Manager in India from 4 September 2026, so businesses of different sizes can buy directly. Check Ads Manager itself for current eligibility, budgets and policies before you plan spend.

Do ads change what ChatGPT answers?

OpenAI says no. It states that advertising does not influence the answers ChatGPT provides, and that ads are clearly labelled and kept separate from the response.

Can I advertise health or politics topics on ChatGPT?

Not next to those conversations. Business Standard reports that ads are not shown next to sensitive or regulated subjects, including health, mental health and politics. Clinics and political advertisers should plan for that limit.

Is a ChatGPT ads test worth it for an Indian brand?

It can be, as a small capped test, especially for considered purchases where people ask detailed questions before buying. The channel is new, so benchmarks are thin. Run it against your own CAC payback ceiling rather than another brand’s claims.
